Health Watch is a public service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we've been talking about working out. Exercise is essential to maintaining health, but you want to take precautions so your exercise doesn't end up doing damage. That's particularly important when youre pregnant.

Dr. Robyn Horsager-Boehrer, an obstetrician at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, says pregnancy isn't a good time to get into a serious exercise program, but a little extra exercise is good if your doctor says it's OK.

Taking the stairs and walking around the neighborhood can help you maintain your health during pregnancy. After delivery, mom and baby exercise classes can help you get back into your pre-baby shape.

Whether or not you're pregnant, it's a good idea to check with your doctor before you start any exercise program.
