Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.
We're talking about travel this week on Healthwatch. You can avoid the fat and calories of fast food by bringing nutritious snacks on a car trip. Be careful, though, to pack those snacks in a way that won't make anyone sick.
Lona Sandon, a registered dietitian at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says one of the best ways to avoid illness is to wash your hands before eating or handling food. That may be difficult to do when you're traveling, so use hand wipes or antibacterial gels. Keep perishables and raw foods cold.
Good, safe travel snacks include single serving cereal boxes and fruit cups, individually wrapped peanut butter crackers, granola or cereal bars, trail mix, and canned or vacuum-packed tuna lunch kits.
