This week on Healthwatch, we've been talking about stress. While much stress comes from having too much to do, not having anything to do can also be stressful for some people. Loneliness can be a major source of stress. In fact, psychiatrists at UT Southwestern Medical Center say it's the biggest single issue they see in their practice - even more than substance abuse and depression.
Dr. Alan LaGrone, a UT Southwestern psychiatrist, says the first step toward beating loneliness is getting out of your house. Get involved in an activity that interests you. With the weather getting warmer, it's prime time for outdoor activities. Don't wait until summer because you'll miss the preparation and joining phases for these activities. Take lessons or join a club, and soon you'll be meeting more people.
