The Thermage® procedure is a technologically advanced approach to treating the signs of aging. The US FDA approved method for tightening skin using an advanced, non-invasive form of radio frequency device called ThermaCool TC™. The procedure uses radio frequency energy to stimulate the production of new collagen and increase the thickness of the epidermis. The result is a procedure that is designed to:

  • Produces new collagen over a period of time resulting in a more youthful appearance
  • Reduce the signs of aging skin by tightening the underlying tissue
  • Reduce the occurrence of adverse effects with new technology that protects the skin and provides a safe and effective treatment for wrinkles, skin laxity and acne
  • Provide patients with a “no downtime” procedure

The Thermage® procedure can help restore your skin to a more youthful appearance without the downtime or prolonged recovery as seen with other types of treatments. It is the ideal “pick-me-up” procedure for restoring a youthful appearance. For more information, please view the "Frequently Asked Questions" link provided.

Am I a good candidate?

The Thermage® procedure has been successful in treating such skin conditions such as wrinkles, acne and tightening of the skin around the jaw, face, brow. It is effective for all skin colors and ideal for sun-damaged skin. The procedure is geared toward people who are not ready for a face and/or browlift but are starting to see laxity in their skin as well as the formation of wrinkles around the eye area.

Why do I need a consultation?

A consultation is necessary prior to scheduling your Thermage® procedure. The consultation allows your doctor to determine whether this would be the most appropriate skin rejuvenation treatment for you based on your skin type and condition. You may find, during your consultation, that other treatments available in the clinic may benefit your skin condition better. Some treatments may also require a skin care regimen before beginning your treatment. The only way to determine if this is necessary is by having the initial consultation with one of our doctors.

How is the treatment performed?

Your Thermage® treatment will be performed at The James W. Aston Ambulatory Care Center on the campus of UT Southwestern Medical Center.

You will need to discontinue use of retinal products and alpha or beta hydroxy acids at least 24 hours prior to treatment but you may resume their use the day following treatment.

Depending on the areas of treatment the procedure can last from a few minutes to an hour. An anesthetic cream is applied one hour before the treatment to numb the surface of the skin to help make the treatment more comfortable. The tip of the hand unit for the ThermaCool TC™ delivers a brief intense heating sensation that tightens the deep collagen fibers of the skin and its underlying tissue. This deep thermal tightening of collagen also signals a natural biological repair process that causes additional skin tightening and restoration of younger skin appearance. A cooling spray is delivered before, during and after each application of the tip to reduce discomfort.

How long do the results last?

The results of the treatment are not typically instantaneous but the tightening is gradual over a 2-6 month period. Unpublished reports by experienced physicians indicate that results may last as long as 18 months or longer, based on the patient's natural aging process.

How long will the healing process take?

Patient recovery from the Thermage® procedure is immediate. You may return to your normal activities immediately, as there is usually no “downtime.” Minimal redness is seen in some patients but in most cases it disappears shortly after treatment. Heat-related complications may occur but are uncommon. There is no special care needed after treatment. As part of your skin care program, sunscreen is recommended.
