COS Grants Funding - Research funding opportunities in Community of Science (COS) through the UTSW Library web page.Using "postdoctoral fellowship" as the search term brought 1,015 citations.  Two features of COS are of particular interest:

GlaxoSmithKline Postdoctoral Fellowship in Imaging and Integrative Pharmacology

GSK is awarding a postdoctoral fellowship to support training in pulmonary/cardiovascular imaging and pharmacology. The 2 year fellowship term will examine mechanistic links between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular disease.

ASPET-Merck Postdoctoral Fellowships in Integrative Pharmacology

The ASPET-Merck Postdoctoral Fellowship in Integrative Pharmacology will renew the competition in Cancer Pharmacology. Fellowship term is three years with no less than six months of the Fellowship to be spent at the Merck Research Laboratories in Boston, MA. Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Training Award
Purpose:
  • Fund innovative, high impact research that seeks to (1) prevent prostate cancer, (2) detect prostate cancer, (3) cure prostate cancer, and (4) improve the quality of life for individuals living with prostate cancer and for their families.
  • Provides primarily salary support for the trainee and requires active involvement of a mentor who is an
    established prostate cancer researcher from an appropriate discipline.
  • Postdoctoral trainees may request up to $115,000 over 2 years for stipends, seminars, and travel.
Eligibility:
  • Must have successfully completed a doctoral thesis at the time of award negotiation
  • Must have 3 years or less of postdoctoral experience at the time of proposal submission
  • Have a designated mentor who has an established track record in prostate cancer research
  • All individuals, regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship status, may apply as long as they are employed by, or affiliated with, an eligible institution

  American Lung Association - Senior Research Training Fellowship

Purpose:

  • Supports research in adult pulmonary medicine, pediatric pulmonary medicine and lung biology.

Eligibility:

  • MDs entering the 4th and 5th year of their research fellowship, and/or PhDs seeking further academic training as scientific investigators.
  • Offers $32,500 annually for up to two years.

Deadline:  September 1, 2006; apply on-line

Department of Defense Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Postdoctoral Award
 

Purpose:
  • Funding innovative projects, particularly those involving multidisciplinary and/or multi-institutional collaborations and alliances that have the potential to make a significant impact on breast cancer.
  • Projects that address under investigated avenues of research or novel applications of existing technologies are strongly encouraged.
  • The research project must be multidisciplinary, incorporating aspects of each major discipline for which a mentor is named.
  • Awards of up to $150,000 annually for up to 3 years will be made.
Eligibility:
  • Applicants should not have been in the laboratory or research setting in which the proposed research is to be performed for more than 2 years as of the proposal submission deadline
  • Should have a total of less than 5 years of postdoctoral research experience (excluding clinical residency or fellowship training)
  • All individuals, regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship status, may apply as long as they are employed by, or affiliated with, an eligible institution
Deadline:  May 23, 2006
 
ASPET-Merck Postdoctoral Fellowships in Integrative Pharmacology:  Cancer Pharmacology
Purpose:
  • Increase the number of well-trained scientists with expertise in pharmacology and in integrative whole organ systems pharmacology.
  • Fellowship term is three years with no less than six months of the Fellowship to be spent at the Merck Research Laboratories in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • Award is for $42,000 in stipend, $3,000 for travel expenses, and a $10,000 institutional allowance (for research costs only, not applicable to benefits or institutional overhead) annually for 3 years.
Eligibility:
  • M.D., Ph.D., D.O. or related degree with demonstrated interest and experience in in-vivo pharmacology
  • Has a mentor who is a scientist in good standing at host institution and who agrees to supervise Fellow to undertake research, with an emphasis on in-vivo pharmacology, in an appropriate area of interest (see web site for detailed list)

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association (ALSA) Investigator-Initiated Research Grant Program
  • Supports innovative research of high scientific merit in stem cell research, disease mechanism, therapeutic approaches, model systems, and genetics.
  • One or two awards of $35,000 to $40,000 are granted annually for 2 years.
Eligibility:
  • New post-doctoral fellow or have been a fellow for a maximum of one year
Deadline:  Abstracts are due annually on January 2, with the completed application due March 1


Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF) Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship

Purpose:

  • Provides up to $90,000 annually (stipend and expenses) for up to 3 years.
  • Program is designed to attract qualified and promising health scientists, to provide an opportunity to receive full time research training, and to assist these promising individuals in transitioning from a fellowship to an independent (faculty-level) position.
  • Awarded to applicants who have demonstrated superior scholarship and show the greatest promise for future achievement in research, including either clinically relevant research or basic research.

Eligibility:

  • Early stage of postdoctoral career; no more than 5 years after graduate degree
  • No citizenship requirements
  • Application must be submitted electronically, following the instructions

Deadline:   January 17, 2006 and July 15, 2006


National Ataxia Foundation Research Fellowship Awards

Purpose:

  • Program provides limited, short-term financial support new and innovative studies that are relevant to the cause, pathogenesis, or treatment of the hereditary or sporadic ataxias.
  • Average awards will be in the $35,000 to $45,000 range.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should have completed at least one year of post-doctoral training, but not more than two at the time of application.
  • Candidates should have shown a commitment to research in the field of ataxia.
  • A letter from the mentor should outline a program of studies for the applicant, and delineate the candidate’s future plans.

Deadline:   Anticipated to be September 15, 2006, but check their website for the most current information

United Negro College Fund-Merck Science Initiative: Postdoctoral Science Research Fellowship

Purpose:

  • Designed to increase the number of African Americans in the pipeline of biomedical science education and research.
  • Provide fellowship up to $70,000 which includes stipend up to $55,000 and a grant of up to $15,000 to support the fellow's research needs.

Eligibility:

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • African American
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree recipient in a life or physical science.
  • Appointed as a new or continuing postdoctoral fellow at an academic or non-academic research institution (private industrial laboratories are excluded).

Deadline:  December 15th of each calendar year

American Australian Association:  Fellowships for Study and Research in Australia

Purpose:

  • Promote educational exchange between the United States and Australia, and strengthen science, technology and business relationships.
  • Up to 4 fellowships of up to US$20,000 each are to be awarded.  This includes flight allowances between the US and Australia.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should be U.S. citizens or permanent residents doing research at the post-doctoral level. Candidates may already be in Australia at the time of application.
  • Conduct a well-defined research project or study in one of the following fields: life sciences, or medicine. There will be particular interest in the field of stem cell research.
  • Demonstrate why travel to Australia is important to their research or study and why they cannot achieve the same experience in the United States.
  • Provide proof of the arrangements made at an Australian university or institution where the research or study will be conducted in the next 12 months.
  • Devote full time to their research or study.
  • Fluent in English.

Pharmacology Research Associate (PRAT) Program Fellowships

Purpose:

  • Competitive postdoctoral fellowship program to pursue research in one of the laboratories of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
  • It is intended for individuals with backgrounds in the basic or clinical sciences who wish to obtain advanced experience in an area of pharmacology, or for those who are already pharmacologists to gain experience in new fields.
  • Three year fellowships located in NIH or FDA laboratories at competitive salary levels commensurate with a monthly supplies allowance and an annual travel allowance will be awarded.

Eligibility:

  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
  • Received Ph.D. or other professional degree within the last 5 years.
  • Applicants must have selected a preceptor at the NIH or FDA prior to application.

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science & Technology Policy Fellowships

Purpose:

  • One year fellowships to provide the opportunity for accomplished and societally aware scientists and engineers to participate in and contribute to the public policymaking process of the federal government.
  • Annual stipends begin at $64,000. Fellows receive a relocation allowance, health insurance reimbursement, a travel allowance, support for placement, an eight-day intensive orientation, and a year-long program of professional development activities that include monthly seminars, training workshops, networking gatherings, and a year-end wrap-up event.

Eligibility:

  • U.S. citizens who have received their Ph.D. in any biological or medical science.
  • Demonstrate exceptional competence in their specialty appropriate to their career stage, and have the strong endorsement of three references.
  • Show an understanding of the opportunities for science and engineering to support a broad range of non-scientific issues, and display a commitment to apply their scientific or technical expertise to serve society.
  • Be articulate communicators, both verbally and in writing, to decision-makers and non-scientific audiences, and have the ability to work effectively with individuals and groups outside the scientific community.

Sofja Kovalevskaja Award for Outstanding Scholars

Purpose:
  • Provides a 4 year, 1.2 million Euros fellowship to be conducted at a German institution of the fellows' choice.
  • Gives award winners an opportunity to concentrate on high-level, innovative research work of their own choice in Germany, thus promoting the internationalisation of research in Germany.

Eligibility:

  • Completed his/her doctorate with distinction
  • Published work in prestigious international journals or publishing houses
  • Be 35 years old or younger
  • A detailed information sheet, which is able to be downloaded, is available

Department of Defense Breast Cancer Era of Hope Postdoctoral Award

Purpose:

  • To challenge the scientific community to design innovative research that will foster new directions for, address neglected issues in, and bring new investigators to the field of breast cancer research in order to eradicate breast cancer.
  • Identify and fund exceptionally talented recent doctoral graduates who possess both the ambition and the ability to pursue highly innovative breast cancer research during their postdoctoral training. The proposed research should challenge current scientific dogma and demonstrate an ability to look beyond tradition and convention.
  • Awards are made for up to $90,000 per year for direct costs for up to 3 years.
Eligibility:
  • Applicants must be nominated to be considered for this award mechanism; however, self-nominations will be accepted
  • Applicants should not have been in the laboratory or research setting in which the proposed research is to be performed for more than 2 years as of the proposal submission deadline (July 25, 2006)
  • Should have a total of less than 4 years of postdoctoral research experience (excluding clinical residency or fellowship training)
  • Eligible applicants should have or expect to have successfully completed a doctoral or medical degree at the time of award negotiation (between December 2006 and September 2007
  • All individuals, regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship status, may apply as long as they are employed by, or affiliated with, an eligible institution

Serono Foundation Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology

Purpose:

  • Awards $45,000 (US) annually for 2 years to each successful applicant as a salary and to defray personal expenses.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. and/or M.D. or equivalent academic degree, preferably not more than 3 years prior to the start date of the fellowship
  • Candidates applying for a postdoctoral fellowship should be changing laboratories
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English (verbal and written)
