Dr. Paul E. Pepe, chairman of emergency medicine, received the award for Outstanding Contributions in EMS from the American College of Emergency Physicians.

U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona presented Dr. Pepe with the award at a Washington, D.C., luncheon Sept. 26.

Dr. Pepe holds the Riggs Family Chair in Emergency Medicine and is also chairman of the emergency room at Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he oversees an emergency department staff of about 40 faculty members and 60 residents and fellows.

He and his staff are responsible for the medical direction provided for the North Texas Poison Control Center; the BioTel System, a centralized EMS program that includes more than 3,000 firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics from the fire departments for Dallas and more than a dozen surrounding cities. He also provides medical direction for the Dallas Police Department and the Dallas Metropolitan Medical Response System for Anti-terrorism.
