Division of Genetic Diagnostics Laboratory

Director:

Kathleen S. Wilson, M.D., FCAP, FACMG

                Kathleen.Wilson@utsouthwestern.edu

Laboratory Overview:

The Division of Genetic Diagnostics performs high complexity genetic diagnostic testing with federal regulatory approval under the legislative act of CLIA ’88 and the College of American Pathologists (CAP).  The latest technologic modalities are employed including conventional cytogenetic analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and the microarray technology of array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (aCGH).
The laboratory staff includes board certified cytogenetic technologists with over two decades of experience in clinical cytogenetics.  The Laboratory Information System (LIS) for the division features online ordering and reporting, providing rapid notification and specimen tracking for specimen delivery and no delay from the time of sign-out to the posting of a final report.   The division’s laboratory director and staff are committed to the highest caliber of patient care utilizing the most advanced technology in an environment of interactive clinical consultation.

About the Laboratory Director:

Kathleen S. Wilson, M.D. serves as both the laboratory director and chief of the division.  Dr. Wilson is an Associate Professor in the McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development and is board-certified by the American Board of Pathology (ABP) in Clinical Pathology and the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) in Clinical Cytogenetics.  She is also a fellow of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG). Dr. Wilson received her medical degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.  She is a member of the Cytogenetics Resource Committee (CyRC) of the CAP and ACMG, which is involved with setting national policy for cytogenetics by developing accreditation guidelines and issuing proficiency tests. She also currently chairs the Economics of Genetic Services Committee for ACMG and is actively involved nationally in policy related to reimbursement for high complexity genetic testing, with a particular focus on microarray issues. Dr. Wilson’s interest and experience in cytogenetics and molecular cytogenetics has been longstanding with recent publications in Genetics in Medicine and the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, and book chapters in Abeloff: Clinical Oncology, 4th ed. and Clinical Laboratory Hematology, 2nd ed.
