Prior training

Completion of a pediatric residency through the PL-3 year, or

Completion of an anesthesiology residency (3 years)
The three year program:

Three years training total

One year of clinical service

One year of research. The fellow will choose clinical or basic science research, and the mentor under which the research will be accomplished. Fellows admitted to the NIH Training Grant will receive 24 months of protected research time in a basic science laboratory.
First year: (approximate schedule):

One month orientation

One month anesthesia

Two months Children's Medical Center PICU, every fourth night call covering both units

Two months total at Children's Medical Center PTICU with every fourth night call covering both units.

Two months total cardiothoracic surgery with every fourth night call

One month daytime transport with every fourth night call

Two rotations of research with every fourth night call covering the PICU and PTICU

One month vacation/research
Second year:

Two months PICU/PTICU with every fourth night call

Two months of cardiothoracic surgery service with every fourth night call

Two months night call as “senior” fellow

Five months research without call

One month vacation/research
Third year:

Four months Children's Medical Center, “senior” fellow call

Seven months research without call

Fourth year (optional):

Vacation: Three weeks a year out of no-call months

Meetings: One major national meeting during the course of fellowshipo and all approved meetings during which the fellow is presenting research. All other meetings are at the discretion of the program director.

Conferences: Seventry percent attendance is requried at physiology, research, pharmacologyk ethics, case conferences, jounal clubs and mortality review.
