In 1989 researchers at UT Southwestern refined a fast-acting drug called tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, which can rapidly dissolve blood clots in patients with ischemic stroke, greatly reducing the risk of death or severe disability. Quick medical intervention with tPA is still considered to be the most effective treatment for individuals who have an ischemic stroke episode. The American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, reinforces the value of tPA treatment, advising that the sooner treatment is begun, the better the chances for improved recovery.
At UT Southwestern Medical Center, a team of experts, including nurses, neurologists, interventional neuroradiologists and neurological surgeons, are on call 24 hours a day to ensure that our stroke patients are evaluated and treated rapidly. If surgery is required, our neurosurgeons are highly skilled in the treatment of the full range of stroke, aneurysms and other blood vessel problems using cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery.
By working within a multidisciplinary medical team, our physicians can offer you a comprehensive diagnosis and precise course of action to begin your treatment. Each member of this multidisciplinary team has developed expertise in one or more areas of specialization, and the team meets formally once a week to discuss each of our stroke patients.

Our patients also benefit from immediate access to UT Southwestern’s comprehensive stroke resources. Instead of transferring to multiple facilities for tests, such as MRIs or computerized axial tomography scans, our patients have access to complete stroke testing techniques, as well as the specialists required to interpret their results, on one campus.

At UT Southwestern, our neurosurgeons have specific areas of focus and expertise even within the areas of stroke, aneurysms and other blood vessel disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. Our physicians also work with UT Southwestern’s medical support staff to ensure any ongoing, outpatient therapy is fully integrated with your treatment strategy.
