Seventy to 85 percent of all people will have back pain once in their lifetime. It is thus one of the most significant health problems known to mankind. Back pain can be merely mild, dull or annoying, but it can also be persistent and acute, causing disability and very restricted mobility, severely interfering with daily activities and normal functioning.

Many people suffering from back pain can heal relatively quickly through treatment prescribed by their primary-care physician, together with other life-style changes such as exercise and diet. Yet for others, with more complex spinal disorders, patients must be referred to a medical center where their conditions can be managed collaboratively by a highly skilled team of medical professionals.

At UT Southwestern, our physicians, of national and international renown, and who very often serve in teaching and research roles as well, will work with a multidisciplinary team of specialists to provide you with the best health care available. They have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating mild and common disorders as well as complex disease processes of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, such as those requiring sophisticated types of tumor resection, spinal decompression and spinal reconstruction.
