Motility refers to how the gut moves. It involves a complex interaction between muscles of the gut, nerves and the brain. Problems in any of these components can cause the gut to move slower( for example, constipation, delayed emptying of the stomach) or faster ( for example, some types of diarrhea), reverse direction( for example, vomiting)or a combination ( for example, irritable bowel syndrome).

The gut has as many nerves as the spinal cord, referred to as the "gut brain". Sometimes, this brain is hyper sensitive to different stimuli, and can lead to  severe belly pain without any dangerous cause ( similar to a  headache or a migraine).

Our center specializes in disorders of motility, as well as abdominal pain. We have state of the art equipment for diagnosing various motility problems. We are the only University affiliated, tertiary care center in North texas to offer this service. Treatment for these disorders can be long and challenging, and our team has the expertise to help you and your child understand and deal with this. We have a clinic dedicated to treating difficult constipation cases, including soiling of underwear with stool. We also have an abdominal pain clinic to deal ,where along with a specialized children's anesthesiologist we treat children with severe functional abdominal pain.

If you feel we could help your child, or you have further questions, please e mail us GImotility@childrens.com to schedule an appointment or call 214 -456- 8000 / toll free 1-800 568- 8937.
