Nuclear Medicine Center

The Nuclear Medicine Center (214-648-3355) performs functional brain imaging, primarily imaging of regional cerebral blood flow, as determined by single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).  This procedure is useful in determining the activity of various brain regions at rest and in response to the administration of pharmacologic and cognitive challenges, both in normal subjects and in patients with various neurologic and psychiatric disorders.

Our primary focus is on research rather than clinical service.  Most of our SPECT functional brain imaging examinations are performed as part of research principally funded by the NIH.  The work of this laboratory, which is now 23 years old, is recognized both nationally and internationally.

Current research projects:

  • Aging
    • Aging Effects in Memory

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
    • Neurobiology of Alzheimer’s Disease Aging – Core B (Year 11)
    • Differential Diagnosis

  • Depression
    • Vagal Nerve Stimulation in Depressed Patient

  • Frontotemporal Disease

  • Speech & Language
    • SPECT rCBF in Language Reception
    • Pharmacologic Activation of Dormant Cortex in the Restoration of Speech and Language Following Cochlear Implantation in the Deaf
    • SPECT Analysis on Normal and Hearing Impaired Adults and Children

  • Stroke/Aphasia
    • Neural Correlates of Lexical Semantic Aphasia Treatment

  • Substance Abuse
    • Limbic Sensitivity in Cocaine Addiction
    • Limbic Sensitivity in Alcohol Addiction

  • Trauma
    • Pediatric Head Trauma

In addition at UT Southwestern, we collaborate with various entities at the University of Texas at Dallas, and the University of Texas at Arlington. We are located near the laboratories of the division of Advanced Radiological Sciences, with whom we also collaborate on advances in functional brain imaging instrumentation, particularly for small animal molecular imaging.
