Project 1: RCT of HCC Screening Rate Improvement Strategies

Project 1 is the first study to implement and evaluate multicomponent strategies to improve hepatocellular cancer (HCC) screening that are patient-centered and designed to overcome barriers to care among poor, minority patients in a safety net health system.

The project will combine Electronic Medical Record (EMR)-enabled case identification, system-level screening outreach, and patient navigation to improve identification of cirrhotic patients, promote HCC screening completion, and facilitate follow-up of abnormal screening tests.

We will engage stakeholders throughout the research process, evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of HCC screening strategies, and determine which patient subgroups benefit the most. Our study will create a blueprint for innovative, sustainable, and disseminable programs to improve the early detection, prognosis, and outcomes of hepatocellular cancer.
