Prospective comparison of culture yield by endoscopically-guided swabs and suction aspirates for chronic rhinosinusitis in the post-surgery setting

Summary

In this study, endoscopically visualized purulent discharge from paranasal sinus ostia, meatus, or cavity will be collected in 50 chronic rhinosinusitis patients, send for gram stain and bacterial aerobic culture. The essential information will be recorded on data collection form include patient’s age, sex, history of antibiotic use, duration of therapy, previous sinus surgeries, endoscopic findings, and side/site of sinus culture.

Participant Eligibility

1. Patient age at least 18 years old
2.Previous endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis with/without nasal polyposis or sinonasal/skull base neoplasm
3. Chronic rhinosinusitis with/without nasal polyposis or history of previous endoscopic tumor resection OR Acute exacerbation on chronic rhinosinusitis symptoms more than 1 week
4. Endoscopic examination with mucopurulent secretions emanating from sinus ostia/cavity or middle meatus or sphenoethmoidal recess in the setting of previous sinus surgery.
