Summary

This is a multi-center study that will enroll men aged 60-80 years who have smoked for at least 20 years. Target enrollment is 1200 at 6 sites, with local site target of 200. Men must meet eligibility criteria to enroll. Consented participants will complete a short questionaire on day 1 and be sent home with a urine testing kit and instructions for performing test, recording results, and mailing back the results. Each will be instructed about what to do if a positive test occurs. Participants testing positive will return to clinic for follow-up testing which includes an additional urine sample that will be tested with 3 different bladder cancer tests and standard diagnostic tests. Treatment will be provided as needed. Research test results will not be used for clinical purposes.

Home testing is to be carried out for 10 consecutive days. Everyone with negative tests for the first cycle will complete a second cycle of testing approximately 9 months later. Participants will complete a follow-up questionnaire at year one, two, and three via mail.
Patients consenting to the optional substudy will have an additional blood draw that will be sent off for storage and genetic testing.
