Effect of Potassium Alkali on Bone Loss and Stone Forming Risk Induced by Atkins Diet
The study design will be a crossover trial between potassium citrate and potassium chloride during the Atkins[Single Quote] Induction diet in the same subjects. There will be four phases conducted sequentially. In Phase 1, subjects will be maintained on their Usual diet for 1 week. In Phase 2, subjects will be kept on the Atkins[Single Quote] Induction diet for two weeks while taking one of two potassium preparations. Phase 3 will be a
* period when subjects will be on their Usual diet for 1 week. In Phase 4, subjects will be kept on the same Induction diet for 2 weeks while taking the other potassium preparation. The choice of potassium salt will be made randomly using a simple randomization scheme.
80 subjects will be recruited so that at least 30 will complete the trial. They will be normal subjects of any gender or ethnicity, who plan to be on a weight-reducing diet. Only those with a body mass index greater than 22 kg/m2 will be allowed to participate.
