Pathways between Socioeconomic Status and Behavioral Cancer Risk Factors
The study will recruit a racially/ethnically diverse community sample from the Dallas metropolitan area that includes both smokers and non-smokers (n [?] 200). after an initial telephone screening, participants will be scheduled to attend the first study visit, where they will complete study questionnaires. all participants will receive a smartphone at the initial study visit and they will be asked to carry it with them at all times. Participants will complete eMa assessments 5 times per day (4 random assessments + 1 daily dairy) for 7 consecutive days. Geographic location coordinates will be captured during each eMa assessment to link characteristics of the neighborhood environment (e.g., neighborhood socioeconomic status) with health behavior. Participants will also be provided with an accelerometer which they will be asked to wear for 7 days to measure physical activity. after one week, participants will come in for a final visit to return the smart phone and accelerometer to receive their monetary compensation (i.e., gift cards). Participants will be compensated upon the return of the smartphone and accelerometer at the second and final visit, based on the percentage of random assessments that they complete. Specifically, those who complete 50%-64% of assessments will receive a $40 gift card, those who complete 65%-79% of assessments will receive a $60 gift card, and those who complete 80% or more of their assessments will receive a $80 gift card. Those who complete [Less Than] 50% of assessments will receive a $20 gift card for returning the phone and accelerometer. Participants will not be compensated for completing self-initiated assessments (i.e., exercise assessments).
Individuals will be included in the study if they 1) earn a score >= 45 on the REALM indicating > 6th grade English literacy level, 2) are >= 18 years of age, and 3) possess a valid home address and a functioning home telephone number.
