Annual Women's Health Symposium set for Feb. 2

  

DALLAS – Jan. 7, 2010 – UT Southwestern Medical Center will hold its Women’s Health Symposium on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Topics will include genetic testing, brain health and what women need to know about prostate cancer.

The longtime event has been renamed the Carolyn P. Horchow Women’s Health Symposium in memory of a founder of the event who died in June 2009.

The 2010 symposium is chaired by longtime friend of Mrs. Horchow, Margaret Anne Cullum. Her steering committee members are Ruth Altshuler, Trudy Best, Harriet Burrow, Betsy Cullum, Sissy Cullum, Leslie W. el-Effendi, Regen Fearon, Chandler Lindsley, Ruth Lindsley, Dr. Chandler Lindsley, Melissa Macatee, Nancy Perot Mulford, Lizzie Routman, Nancy Shutt, Diana Strauss, Barbara Stuart and co-founder Patricia M. Patterson.

“Shh! What Women Really Want to Know But May Not Want to Ask” will include presentations by and discussions with leading UT Southwestern physicians. It will take place from 8:45 a.m. to noon on the UT Southwestern North Campus in the Excellence in Education Foundation Auditorium located in the Simmons/Hamon Biomedical Research Buildings, 6000 Harry Hines Blvd.

A demonstration of an automatic external defibrillator will take place at 8:45 a.m.

Scheduled speakers and their topics are:

•        Dr. Joseph Maher, associate professor in the Eugene McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development and of internal medicine and pediatrics – “Genetic Testing and Personalized Medicine”

•        Dr. Laura Lacritz, associate professor of psychiatry – “Enhancing Brain Health: How to Stay Alert”

•        Dr. Karen Bradshaw, professor of obstetrics and gynecology – “Sexuality Throughout a Woman’s Life”

•        Dr. Claus Roehrborn, professor of urology – “Prostate Problems – What Every Woman Needs to Know”

•        Dr. Phillippe Zimmern, professor of urology – “Incontinence and Prolapse in 2010: Who Needs a Lift?”

Dr. Susan Cox, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UT Southwestern, is faculty adviser for the event. Dr. Carol Podolsky, assistant professor of pediatrics, is physician adviser.

The registration fee for the symposium is $35, which includes an optional lunch, to be served at noon on the Fourteenth Floor in the adjacent T. Boone Pickens Biomedical Building.
