The UT Southwestern Liquid Protein Diet Program is a medically advanced and scientifically proven approach to weight loss. Our graduated, three-step program is designed by experts in medicine, nutrition, fitness, motivation and education.
The most rigorous version of the liquid protein diet contains about 400-800 calories per day and consists of specially-developed protein products. The powder product for shakes dissolves in water, milk, tea, yogurt and similar liquids. Soups and protein bars are also available. No other food is consumed initially, although after a certain period, some vegetables and other foods can be added.
As patients approach their goal weight, more meals are added with less reliance on the protein products. Ultimately, patients graduate to the maintenance program which includes long-term supervision with education and accountability.
The program can be used to lose weight prior to weight-loss surgery, which has been proven to help reduce time spent in the operating room. The program does qualify as a six-month, weight-loss surgery pre-operative dietary program as required by many insurance companies. We also have an exercise program available through our physical therapy department, which may help patients to qualify for surgery in three months rather than six depending on their insurance company’s requirements.
