Gastric Sleeve Resection is one of the weight-loss options offered by the UT Southwestern's Clinical Center for the Management of Obesity to effectively treat obesity and related health complications. Patients should be aware this is a new procedure and, while it shows promise, no reliable, long-term data has been collected nor have controlled clinical trials been performed to support its use. Most insurance companies do not cover the surgery.
During the procedure, a part of the stomach is removed resulting in a smaller organ that somewhat restricts the passage of food. The theory behind the procedure is the portion of the stomach that is removed eliminates the production of a hormone called ghrelin, which causes people to become hungry. Thus, hunger is reduced and weight is lost.
Our surgeons are proficient in this operation and will perform it if the patient decides on this option. However, we prefer the gastric bypass or laparoscopic banding operation. We are happy to discuss all our surgical options at the patient's consultation.
