Sexual dysfunction affects both men and women and can include erectile dysfunction (impotence), low sex drive and painful intercourse.
Often, the symptoms of sexual dysfunction can be the result of one or more underlying conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, insomnia or hormone imbalance. Many prescription and nonprescription drugs can also cause sexual side effects.
In women, painful intercourse can be caused by a variety of factors, from vaginal infections to life-threatening conditions such as ectopic pregnancy. If a woman has sudden, severe pelvic pain, she should see a doctor right away.
