Dotted Line

Life after a kidney donation is not complicated, but it requires a few adjustments. As a donor, you should be committed to follow-up appointments and a healthy lifestyle.

Follow-Up Appointments
You will come back to the Kidney and Liver Clinic several times over the first six months after surgery so that we can make sure you are recovering properly.

  • Seven to 10 days after surgery, you will see your surgeon and have lab work done.
  • Six weeks after surgery, you will see your nephrologist and have lab work.
  • Three months after surgery, you will come for lab work and see the Living Donor Coordinator.
  • Six months after surgery, you will see your nephrologist and have lab work.

We ask you to see your personal doctor one year and two years after surgery and have the doctor send us information on your blood pressure and kidney function. This information is provided to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), and helps to assist in the understanding of the effects of organ donation on the donor.
After that, a healthy lifestyle will ensure a normal life. Be sure to:

  • See you doctor annually
  • Watch your weight
  • Eat a heart-healthy diet
  • Exercise regularly
