Implants should not deter women from annual mammograms
The Center for Breast Care at UT Southwestern Medical Center encompasses a multitude of clinical programs devoted to serving the needs of well women, patients with benign breast disorders and those with breast cancer.
The center has a national reputation for clinical excellence and provides the latest in digital mammography, high resolution breast ultrasound and breast MRI (magnetic-resonance imaging). Minimally invasive breast needle biopsy using stereotactic guidance, ultrasound, or MRI guidance is also available.
For well women without breast cancer symptoms, digital mammographic breast cancer screening exams may be obtained without a physician referral. The patient's results will be mailed to them in 7-10 business days.
With physician referral, diagnostic digital mammography and/or ultrasound are used to evaluate women with symptoms such as breast pain, breast lump or nipple discharge. The patient's results will be discussed with them and given to them in writing at the conclusion of their appointment.
Breast MRI has been shown to be very useful in women who are at high risk for developing breast cancer and is used in conjunction with digital mammography. Our dedicated breast MRI is located in the Center for Breast Care, allowing ease of scheduling and other breast exams, if necessary.
If a suspicious area is found on a screening or diagnostic examination, image guided minimally invasive breast biopsy can be performed in the center by the breast imaging physicians and staff, often on the same day.
