Initial Consultation
To be considered for TMS treatment, all patients must first go through an initial consultation. A Patient Intake Packet will be sent to interested patients and it must be completed prior to scheduling an appointment. Any questions about the packet can be directed to Kimberly Mapes, TMS clinical coordinator, at 214-648-0157.

At the consultation, the patient will meet with a psychiatrist to evaluate whether TMS is appropriate and answer questions regarding the treatment. Patients who are approved for TMS will then be scheduled for their first treatment.

First Treatment
The first treatment will take approximately 90 minutes. The patient will be asked if there have been any medical or psychiatric changes since the last visit. Earplugs will be provided to protect the patient’s hearing.

At the first treatment, the appropriate location and dose will be determined. This takes approximately 30-60 minutes. Then the coil is positioned for the treatment. The TMS coil will produce clicking sounds when it is delivering the magnetic pulses. The treatment will last approximately 40 minutes.

Subsequent Treatments
The patient will always be asked if there are any medical or psychiatric changes since the previous visit and be given earplugs to protect their hearing. Treatment will be approximately 40 minutes and the entire appointment will last approximately 60 minutes.

After five consecutive treatments, the patient will complete a short series of questionnaires to be reviewed by a physician.

Cancellation or stopping treatment
In order for TMS to be effective, it must be performed on a daily basis for a minimum of 20 sessions (four weeks). Missing appointments can affect the patient’s response and is not advised. The patient can choose to stop the treatment at any time and payment for treatments not performed will be refunded.
