UT Southwestern plastic surgeons offer latest fat-busting laser

Patients who have experienced significant weight loss, through diet and exercise, illness, or bariatric surgery, may find excessive folds of skin that they consider unsightly or uncomfortable. Body contouring can eliminate much of the skin excess, especially on the abdomen, arms, breasts, thighs and face, through a variety of procedures.

Some of the body contouring procedures offered at UT Southwestern Medical Center include:

  • Liposuction (Vaser/ultrasound-assisted)
  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
  • Arm lift (brachioplasty)
  • Thigh lift (thighplasty)
  • Body contouring after massive weight loss/bariatric surgery
  • Male breast reduction
  • Buttock enhancement
  • Secondary surgery

Liposuction can give the patient the boost needed to improve the patient’s self image. It is vitally important to have a proper diet and exercise regimen to obtain the maximal results for body contouring surgery.

Patients within 15 to 20 pounds of their optimal body weight and in good physical and mental health with reasonable expectations should be appropriate candidates for liposuction. Before deciding to have surgery, patients should discuss their expectations with the doctor.

Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction, commonly known as UAL, is a relatively new liposuction technique that uses sound waves to "liquefy" unwanted fat. Through small incisions, a cannula-like device delivers sound waves to a specific area of fat that has been injected with saline solution. The fat is then suctioned from the body using a low suction cannula.

UAL, like traditional liposuction, is not a weight reduction procedure. It is a contouring procedure to remove localized bulges or fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. These areas typically include the hips, inner thighs, knees and flanks.
