After a comprehensive evaluation, a UT Southwestern pain management specialist thoroughly explains the patient’s diagnosis and treatment options. Depending on the patient’s specific condition, our specialists may prescribe muscle relaxants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-inflammatory cortisone injections, physical therapy or a minimally invasive therapeutic procedure.

• Facet blocks, in which cortisone is injected into the affected facet joint area, enabling patients to experience pain relief that may last from days to months.
  
  
• Selective nerve root blocks, in which an anti-inflammatory medication is injected into the affected nerve root. The procedure provides significant pain relief and may enable patients to avoid or delay surgery to repair a herniated disc.
  
  
• Spinal cord stimulation, in which a device is implanted under the skin that can be used to send mild electrical currents to the spinal cord, enabling patients to experience a dramatic reduction in their pain.
  
  
• Sympathetic nerve root blocks, in which anesthetic agents are injected around the affected sympathetic nerves to provide pain relief as well as assess damage to the sympathetic nervous system.
  
  
• Diagnostic discography, in which a contrast dye is injected into back discs to help diagnose disc problems and determine whether surgery is a treatment option.
