UT Southwestern Medical Center physicians have the experience and expertise to treat all forms of oral cancer. These serious conditions can adversely affect patients’ lives but are treatable with a variety of therapies and procedures available at UT Southwestern.

In addition, our specialists can reduce or eliminate the health complications, problematic symptoms or other conditions that accompany tumors and cysts of the mouth, jaw and neck. Our compassionate physicians work to provide attentive, personalized care to patients so that they can relieve the pain and functionality problems associated with these conditions.

Warning signs and symptoms that may indicate a pathologic process or cancerous growth include:

  • Reddish patches or whitish patches
  • A sore throat that fails to heal and bleeds easily
  • A lump or thickening
  • Chronic sore throat or hoarseness
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing

Although tumors and cysts of the jaw can affect anyone, there are some risk factors that increase a person’s chance of developing them. Tobacco and alcohol use are the main risk factors; however poor oral hygiene, irritation from ill-fitting dentures, rough surfaces on teeth and poor nutrition can also play a part.
