UT Southwestern Medical Center’s vascular specialists provide safe, effective and minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins and spider veins. For many individuals, procedures to correct varicose veins are necessary to decrease or eliminate discomfort, aches and pains. For others, treating varicose and spider veins is important for cosmetic reasons, to feel better about one’s appearance.

Treatment

Depending on each individual’s specific situation, a UT Southwestern specialist may recommend laser therapy, sclerotherapy, a catheter-assisted procedure, vein stripping or endoscopic vein surgery.

Laser therapy seals veins closed and reroutes the flow of blood to other veins deeper within the leg.

Sclerotherapy injections use a saline-based or similar treatment to absorb the vein and eliminate its appearance (used to treat larger varicose veins that do not respond to laser treatments).

Catheter-assisted procedures use a tiny tube (catheter) to eliminate or close veins using heat or radio waves.

Vein stripping uses small incisions to remove longer veins.

Endoscopic vein surgery allows a vascular surgeon to use small incisions and a tiny camera and video monitor to view the veins during a procedure to close them.

Our specialists have the experience and knowledge needed to effectively use UT Southwestern’s state-of-the-art medical resources to treat all types of varicose and spider veins. During evaluation and treatment for varicose and spider veins, our physicians will also recommend a variety of lifestyle changes, including exercise, nutrition and smoking cessation programs, that can help patients prevent and control future occurrences of varicose veins

Patients with varicose veins can also be treated by our dermatology or plastic surgery services.
