UT Southwestern Medical Center’s vascular interventional radiologists are widely recognized by their peers as experts in the use of advanced medical technology to accurately diagnose and effectively treat vascular disease. Our specialists provide a wide array of radiological procedures that enable them to more frequently employ minimally invasive treatments that help patients avoid open surgery, reduce recovery time and minimize their hospital stay.

UT Southwestern’s interventional radiologists use state-of-the-art fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray imaging), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and catheter-based angiography, giving patients more convenience and less discomfort than traditional surgery. Some of the interventional radiology procedures offered at UT Southwestern include:

  • Angiography – examines the blood vessels to diagnose problems by using a catheter to assess the condition present inside blood vessels.

  • Balloon angioplasty – opens narrowed or blocked arteries using a tiny balloon to expand a blood vessel, including enabling the placement of a stent to keep the vessel open.

  • Embolization – delivers therapeutic agents to problem areas to treat aneurysms and other conditions.

  • Stent procedure – uses a catheter to deliver a mesh-like tube to hold open a clogged vessel.

  • Thrombolysis – administers medication at the site of a blood clot to dissolve the clot.

  • Uterine fibroid embolization – uses therapeutic agents to shrink enlarged, benign tumors of the uterus.

UT Southwestern’s vascular interventional radiology specialists enable the successful treatment of a wide variety of vascular conditions, including aortic and peripheral aneurysms, deep-vein thrombosis, peripheral vascular disease, uterine fibroids and disorders of circulation in the liver, kidneys and intestines. Our caring and compassionate specialists provide all of the advanced diagnostic and treatment procedures patients need to regain and maintain their health.
