UT Southwestern Medical Center offers comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation services to not only manage a lung condition or disease, but also to help patients achieve a renewed quality of life. Our lung specialists provide rehabilitation programs that will enable patients to breathe more efficiently and improve their ability to exercise, as well as provide educational and caring support needed to more effectively treat respiratory conditions.

Tests and Exams

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a key component of the overall strategy that a UT Southwestern pulmonologist designs for the effective treatment of the condition. Scientific research has proven that rehabilitation activities can make a substantial difference in slowing the progression of a lung condition, as well as assisting with remission of a patient’s condition and symptoms.

Treatment

Under the direction of a pulmonologist, our rehabilitation specialists provide a program designed to meet patients’ specific needs. Therapists will work with them in an attentive and compassionate manner to provide the assistance and instruction needed to resume the normal activities of daily life.

The pulmonary rehabilitation program provides a comprehensive team of specialists dedicated to improving a patient’s health and includes physicians, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, dietitians, psychologists and social workers.

Depending on the patient’s condition, our rehabilitation program may include therapeutic exercises that will improve endurance, flexibility and strength. Some medical treatments may also include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, bronchodilators, mucus-control agents, nicotine replacement therapy, oral steroids, oxygen therapy and vaccines to protect against flu and pneumonia.

Patient Education

Educational components of the rehabilitation program will show patients how to conserve energy and retrain their breathing to achieve the best possible results from the treatment of lung disease, including:

  • Greater independence and self-reliance in managing the lung condition.
  • More effectively controlled symptoms and any possible complications that may arise from the condition.
  • Increased knowledge of work-conservation techniques that will improve patients’ ability to not only perform the routines of daily living but also to participate in recreational activities.
  • Increased knowledge of pulmonary disease management and lowered risk for hospital admission.
