UT Southwestern Medical Center is committed to providing the most advanced treatments available for neuromuscular disease, including respiratory complications of neurological disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), muscular dystrophy and myasthenia gravis.

Tests and Exams

For impaired lung function due to a disorder, UT Southwestern offers advanced therapies and pulmonary rehabilitation services. Our pulmonologists will work with patients to reduce symptoms and ameliorate conditions related to reduced lung functioning caused by neuromuscular respiratory disease.

Our lung specialists will thoroughly evaluate how the functioning of the central or peripheral nervous system may contribute to impairment in patients’ respiratory systems and prescribe the right therapies for their specific conditions. Specialists can help improve functioning of the respiratory muscles that are needed for effective lung ventilation by accurately diagnosing any relationship between neurological and neuromuscular disorders.

Treatment

Our pulmonologists will identify how patients’ neuromuscular and neurological conditions are related, so that the treatments provided are most precisely tied to the condition. UT Southwestern lung specialists will partner with patients to address reduced lung volume or other conditions that affect their health.

Patient Education

UT Southwestern applies the latest research to treat lung impairment. Our pulmonologists will help patients access all therapies and rehabilitation services needed to reduce how neuromuscular respiratory disease affects the lungs. We offer the comprehensive treatment options and services needed to improve pulmonary health.
