Cardiac rehabilitation is a critical component of a patient’s recovery and can prevent future heart disease. UT Southwestern Medical Center’s rehabilitation specialists can make an important contribution to reducing the patient’s risk of another heart attack or need for additional surgery. In addition, patients will feel better about their ability to engage in daily job and recreational activities.

Tests and Exams

UT Southwestern includes patients as partners in their rehabilitation and develops customized plans that will make nutrition, exercise and smoking cessation programs an integral and more enjoyable part of their daily routine. As patients at UT Southwestern, they will receive a personalized exercise program based on specific needs, including:

  • Continuous electrocardiogram monitoring
  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • A precise exercise prescription
  • Gradual increase in activity level
  • Peer support

Treatment

Our rehabilitation specialists include cardiologists, registered nurses, exercise physiologists, physical therapists, registered dietitians and pharmacists. Also, cardiac rehabilitation programs are designed according to patients’ specific needs, including specialized programs for the following:

  • Recent heart attack
  • Recent bypass surgery
  • Recent valve surgery
  • Stable angina
  • Coronary angioplasty or stent procedure
  • Cardiomyopathy

By tracking patients’ progress and providing ongoing encouragement to continue with their rehabilitation programs, our specialists provide motivation needed to overcome obstacles that stand in the way of improved health.  Staff closely monitors an individualized program and orders any needed follow-up tests to confirm patients are on a steady path to improved health.

Patient Education

UT Southwestern’s cardiac rehabilitation specialists also provide the education and background knowledge patients need to fully understand heart disease and how the efforts they make will have a profound effect on their continued well-being. By working together, our specialists can help patients achieve dramatic results that include reducing hypertension and cholesterol levels, recovering from any surgery and embarking on lifestyle changes that will improve their outlook on the future.
