Oculoplastic and orbital surgery is plastic surgery focused on the structures surrounding the eye including the eyelids, orbit, lacrimal system, forehead, and mid-face area. Because such surgery can affect one’s ability to see, ophthalmic plastic surgeons are best qualified to perform this delicate surgery. The oculoplastic and orbital surgeons at UT Southwestern Medical Center are all ophthalmologists (medical doctor and eye surgeon) who have completed additional training in plastic surgery relating to the eyes, eyelids and the surrounding structures.

There are a variety of medical problems involving eyelids and surrounding areas. Heavy upper eyelids can sag and possibly interfere with vision, a condition called ptosis. In addition, eyelids can turn towards the eye (entropion) or away from it (ectropion). Other problems can range from benign warts and styes to malignant lesions such as basal cell carcinoma.
