Brain and Spinal Cord Cancer :: Conditions and Illnesses

About Our Program | Conditions and Illnesses | Making an Appointment | Our Physicians | Patient Education Materials | Support Groups and Resources

Every year more than 200,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with brain and spinal cord cancer. UT Southwestern Medical Center offers comprehensive treatments for adult and pediatric brain and spinal cord cancer, including state-of-the-art targeted radiation therapy provided in our Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery Unit. This frameless system delivers highly targeted radiation treatments using multiple small X-ray beams arranged in complex patterns, which are designed to eliminate cancer cells while preserving normal tissue.

After carefully evaluating the patient’s test results, a UT Southwestern neurosurgeon may perform a surgical biopsy to determine the exact nature of the illness. After examining the biopsy, the specialist will plan a precise course of action to treat any discovered cancer — using expertly prescribed chemotherapy, radiation and/or surgical procedures.

UT Southwestern’s physicians and researchers have access to the latest scientific findings and treatments for brain and spinal cord cancers, including:

  • Metastatic brain tumors
  • Common brain tumors
  • Astrocytomas
  • Pineal tumors
  • Schwannomas
  • All glioma and non-glioma tumor types.

Our physicians will clearly explain the patient’s specific condition and thoroughly describe all options available to treat brain cancer.
