Lap Band surgery is an adjustable and reversible procedure that fastens a band around the upper portion of the stomach to create a small pouch, which limits the amount of food an individual can eat. This minimally invasive procedure uses small incisions and a laparoscopic technique that employs a tiny video camera, which enables the surgeon to view and perform the procedure using a video monitor.
The advantage to Lap Band surgery is that it avoids the process of bisecting the small intestine, stapling the stomach, and rerouting the gastrointestinal systems, as performed in gastric bypass surgery.
