UT Southwestern Medical Center bariatric specialists thoroughly explain all of the preparation needed for a successful weight loss program involving laparoscopic surgery or open gastric bypass surgery. Our patients receive counseling to discuss all of the preoperative and postoperative aspects of weight-loss surgery, including what to expect from the surgery and how the procedure represents only one aspect of a comprehensive approach to weight loss and weight management.

To participate in the program, patients must be able to engage in exercise and comply with a gastric bypass diet, which requires careful attention to food selection as well as an avoidance of repetitive overeating. It is essential to carefully follow diet and exercise guidelines prior to surgery as well as after the operation. With a small gastric pouch following surgery, patients will only be able to eat small quantities of food at a time and should be prepared to adhere to a regimented diet.

Our nutritionists meet with patients on a regular basis before and after surgery to develop individual meal plans that take into consideration the patient’s food preferences and nutritional needs. Exercise therapists also work with patients to establish fitness goals before and after surgery, which are critical to achieving desired results.

Prior to surgery, we encourage patients to speak with other individuals who have had weight-loss surgery. Prospective patients should understand not only how the procedure has benefited others, but also how long-term changes must be made to nutrition and exercise habits to achieve the best possible results.
