UT Southwestern Medical Center clinicians and researchers are continually investigating how to help our patients achieve the best possible outcome from advanced surgical procedures and weight loss programs to treat obesity.

UT Southwestern is one of the few institutions in the nation that offers all types of bariatric procedures, and is a leader in bariatric surgery.

A few factors that make our program unique:

  • UT Southwestern's Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery is one of only seven facilities in North America, and the only one in Texas, to be accredited by the American College of Surgeons for its $2 million training lab.

  • UT Southwestern's Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery has been named a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

  • UT Southwestern surgeons were the first in North Texas to perform laparoscopic gastric-bypass surgeries. They also performed the region's first Lap Band procedures.

  • UT Southwestern is a major referral center for patients with the most complex obesity conditions.

The medical center’s Bariatric Program draws upon strong representation from physicians in gastroenterology and endoscopy and physicians who specialize in treating obesity and related complications.

UT Southwestern’s comprehensive medical resources enable patients to have an initial consultation, testing, follow-up visits and any needed medical procedures all in one location.
