UTSW University Hospital CEO Dr. John Warner named President-Elect of the American Heart Association

Dr. John Warner, Vice President and CEO of UT Southwestern University Hospitals, was named President-Elect of the American Heart Association.

DALLAS – June 23, 2016 – Dr. John J. Warner, Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of UT Southwestern Medical Center University Hospitals, will become President-Elect of the American Heart Association on July 1 for 2016-2017, then serve as President of the AHA for the 2017-2018 year.

“I’m honored to be selected,” said Dr. Warner, who holds the Jim and Norma Smith Distinguished Chair for Interventional Cardiology and the Audre and Bernard Rapoport Chair in Cardiovascular Research. “I’ve been involved with the AHA at every stage of my professional life, and know firsthand the contributions the organization makes to research, education, and the health and wellness of people all over the world. I am looking forward to serving the organization, and using my experiences as a clinician, clinical researcher, and health care executive in service of the missions of the American Heart Association.”

Dr. Warner has previously served on the Dallas, Southwest Affiliate board, and national Board of Directors for the AHA, founded in 1924 and now the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke.  

“As a cardiologist and CEO of our university hospitals, Dr. Warner has proven himself to be a visionary and inspirational leader who has been a force for excellence in the care we deliver. I am confident that these same qualities will enable him to have great impact in his leadership of AHA. We are enormously proud to have him elected to serve in this important role,” said Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky, President of UT Southwestern, who holds the Philip O’Bryan Montgomery, Jr., M.D. Distinguished Presidential Chair in Academic Administration and the Doris and Bryan Wildenthal Distinguished Chair in Medical Science.

An Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Warner earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and his M.B.A. from the Physician Executive Program at the University of Tennessee. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at UT Southwestern, where he served as Chief Resident. He completed fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology at Duke University Medical Center, and served on the Duke Cardiology faculty before returning to UT Southwestern in 2003. At UT Southwestern, he served as Medical Director of the Doris and Harry W. Bass Jr. Clinical Center for Heart, Lung, and Vascular Disease, and as Assistant Vice President for Hospital Planning, he led the planning and construction of the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital.

As CEO of University Hospitals, Dr. Warner oversees the 460-bed Clements University Hospital, Zale Lipshy University Hospital, and the clinical operations of all hospital-based clinics and services. In March of this year, Dr. Warner was additionally named a Senior Executive Officer for Southwestern Health Resources, an integrated health care network formed by Texas Health Resources and UT Southwestern that features 27 hospitals and 300 clinics throughout North Texas, as well as an expansive network of over 2,000 physicians with expertise in primary care and specialty care across a 16-county area with more than 6 million residents. His SEO responsibilities include oversight and integration for the network’s Dallas-based hospitals including Clements University Hospital, Zale Lipshy University Hospital, and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.
