Circulation, published weekly, is the American Heart Association’s peer-reviewed scientific journal providing original research, commentary, and related discussion for cardiologists, cardiovascular scientists, cardiovascular surgeons, electrophysiologists, and others who work in the field of cardiovascular medicine.

“It’s a tremendous honor for me and for our team here at UT Southwestern,” said Dr. Hill, Professor of Internal Medicine and Molecular Biology. “Circulation is the premier cardiology journal in the world. We will strive to present information to readers that is accessible, timely, and impactful.  As part of that effort, we aim to leverage novel technologies, interactive graphics, wide-ranging media resources, and much more.  Importantly, we have a truly world-class group of cardiovascular professionals at UT Southwestern who will bring tremendous energy, creativity, and perspective to this endeavor.”

Dr. Hill, who holds the James T. Willerson, M.D., Distinguished Chair in Cardiovascular Diseases, and the Frank M. Ryburn Jr. Chair in Heart Research, will assume leadership of Circulation on July 1, 2016, and will hold that position for five years. At the end of that term, he will be eligible for a second five-year term.

As editor-in-chief, Dr. Hill will oversee the peer-review process that determines which articles merit publication and will be responsible for the overall content of Circulation, including design of the journal. In addition to overseeing Circulation, Dr. Hill will be responsible for the six Circulation subspecialty journals, Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, Circulation: Cardiovascular Genetics, Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, and Circulation: Heart Failure.

“The selection of Dr. Hill as editor-in-chief of Circulation is a reflection of his stature in the cardiology community. This is the kind of international leadership role that faculty members at UT Southwestern so often achieve,” said Dr. Greg Fitz, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost, and Dean of UT Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Fitz holds the Nadine and Tom Craddick Distinguished Chair in Medical Science, and the Atticus James Gill, M.D. Chair in Medical Science.

Dr. Hill’s research focuses on molecular mechanisms of structural, functional, and electrophysiological remodeling in cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. He earned his medical and doctoral (pharmacology) degrees at Duke University, completed fellowships with the Institut Pasteur in Paris and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Hill joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2002 and is a three-time recipient of the medical school’s Outstanding Teacher Award.

In addition to publishing more than 180 scholarly articles, Dr. Hill co-edited a major textbook titled Muscle: Fundamental Biology and Mechanisms of Disease and has contributed chapters to 14 books. His many honors include serving as the President of the Association of University Cardiologists, election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and the Association of American Physicians, as well as being named an American Heart Association Established Investigator.
