Damaris Rosado, who capped a stellar stay at the UT Southwestern School of Health Professions when she graduated last December, has won the 2015 Schermerhorn Scholarship Award.

A graduate of the Physician Assistant program, Ms. Rosado now works at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso.

While a student in the School of Health Professions, she won the 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship for Community Service in recognition of volunteer efforts that reflect the legacy of the slain civil rights leader. That same year, she also was one of 40 recipients nationwide selected for the 23rd Annual Tylenol Future Care Scholarship program.

Ms. Rosado, who earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Biological Science at UT El Paso, has long planned a career working with underserved populations such as those in her hometown. As a child, she helped her mother serve Thanksgiving dinner to El Paso’s homeless. Throughout her college years Ms. Rosado was a prolific volunteer, and while at UT Southwestern she participated in medical missions in El Paso, Dallas, and in Guatemala.

“I am honored to have been able to attend PA school at such an astonishing school as UT Southwestern that offered me multiple opportunities to grow as a provider and allowed me to grow as a public servant for the community,” Ms. Rosado said. “I am excited to be back in El Paso serving my hometown and will strive to continue to represent UT Southwestern and my profession as best I can.”

Dr. Eugene Jones, Chairman of the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program, said, “Damaris raised the bar for others to emulate by her consistent strong service and volunteer activities that reflected her deep commitment to serving the underserved. She was a remarkable public servant who will continue to be a positive reflection for us as a UT Southwestern alumna.”

Schermerhorn Scholarship Award

The recognition is named for the late Dr. John Schermerhorn, who during a long career at UT Southwestern served as Dean of the School of Health Professions – then known as the UT Southwestern Allied Health Sciences School – from 1971 to 1986.

Each year, outstanding students are honored with the award. Winners receive $500, and have their names are engraved on a plaque in the School of Health Professions conference room along with portraits of past deans.
