Otolaryngology Chairman named: Marple becomes 3rd leader in history of recognized department

Dr. Bradley F. Marple, Professor of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, has been named Chairman of the department, effective November 2014.

Dr. Marple previously served as Vice Chairman and will continue his role as Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education at UT Southwestern Medical School.

“Dr. Marple was identified after a rigorous national search as a superb candidate for this position based on his outstanding accomplishments as a physician, educator, and leader,” said Dr. J. Gregory Fitz, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost, and Dean of UT Southwestern Medical School. “He is well suited to lead the next phase of growth and development in the department. We are fortunate to have his leadership and experience at this important time of transition.”

Dr. Marple, a leading expert in rhinology and sinus disease, becomes the department’s third Chairman. He had served as Vice Chairman since 2001.

UT Southwestern’s Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, also known as Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), is recognized as one of the nation’s leading clinical and research centers for audiology and cochlear implantation, balance and facial nerve disorders, head and neck cancer, sleep disorders, and other specialties. The department has three divisions: Communication and Vestibular Disorders, General Otolaryngology, and Pediatric Otolaryngology, and includes nearly three dozen faculty members who receive referrals from across the Dallas-Fort Worth area and beyond. UT Southwestern is recognized as high-performing in Otolaryngology, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2014–15 annual report on the nation's best hospitals and the department has trained nearly 200 physicians who practice worldwide.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the extraordinary members of this distinguished department who are recognized in all three areas of clinical care, research, and education,” Dr. Marple said. “Moving forward, I hope to maintain the tradition of excellence established by the prior leaders of the department, while continuing to develop the reputation of what is already a top tier program.”

A faculty member at UT Southwestern since 1994, Dr. Marple contributed to the development of leading practice guidelines in otolaryngology and has written more than 140 papers and given invited lectures around the globe. In addition, he has been selected for many national and international responsibilities, including current roles as Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy (AAOA); member of the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Otolaryngology; American Medical Association Delegate for the AAOA; and First Vice President of the American Rhinologic Society.

Dr. Marple’s clinical interests include allergic rhinitis, nasal and sinus polyps, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak of the nose and skull base surgery. His research interests have focused upon intranasal inflammatory regulation and allergic fungal sinusitis.

He serves on the Task Force for Continuing Medical Education for the American Board of Otolaryngology as a board test question author, is a faculty member for the home study course in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, and is former Chair of the ACGME Otolaryngology RRC.

Dr. Marple earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1988 and completed an internship in 1989 and his residency training in 1994 at UT Southwestern.

Dr. Fitz, also a Professor of Internal Medicine, holds the Nadine and Tom Craddick Distinguished Chair in Medical Science, and the Atticus James Gill, M.D. Chair in Medical Science.

Dr. Marple holds the Arthur E. Meyerhoff Chair in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.
