Medical School

Class of 1964: Doug Puryear, M.D., closed his private practice in December 2013.  He spends his time doing locum tenens; fly fishing; prison ministry; simultaneously writing his fourth, fifth and sixth books; and assisting his daughter in teaching her AP psychology class.

Class of 1965: Jack W. Bonner III, M.D. received the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Psychiatrists, in recognition of his significant achievements and leadership in the field of psychiatry. Dr. Bonner is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville. Throughout his career, Dr. Bonner has been a leader in virtually all major psychiatric organizations in the U.S., serving as President of The College, the Southern Psychiatric Association, the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry, and the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems. He has also filled many leadership roles at the American Psychiatric Association, including serving on that organization’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Bonner and his wife, Myra, split their time between homes in Asheville, N.C., and Greenville, S.C.

Class of 1982: Raul M. Cruz, M.D. received the Gold Foundation for Humanism in Medicine Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Foundation. This award recognizes an Academy member who is a practicing physician exemplifying outstanding humanism in caring for patients.

Class of 1991: Judith L. Heidebrink, M.D. is now an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Michigan, and was the inaugural Richard D. and Katherine M. O’Connor Research Professor in Alzheimer's Disease.

Class of 1994: Bradford G. Scott, M.D. was promoted to the rank of Professor with Tenure and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery for Education at Baylor College of Medicine.

Class of 1997: Juan-Sebastian Saldivar, M.D., has been appointed Chief Medical Officer of San Diego-based AltheaDx, Inc., a commercial stage molecular diagnostics company specializing in the field of personalized medicine. “Dr. Saldivar’s clinical and molecular diagnostic expertise will provide added depth to our medical and clinical affairs services,” said Greg Hamilton, AltheaDx CEO. “We are confident that Dr. Saldivar’s experience will prove invaluable … as we continue to expand the reach of our pharmacogenetic testing services.” Prior to joining AltheaDx, Dr. Saldivar served as Vice President of Clinical Services and Medical Affairs at Sequenom Laboratories, a provider of noninvasive prenatal testing services. Dr. Saldivar completed fellowships in medical genetics and clinical molecular genetics at the Harvard/Partners Center for Human Genetics and Genomics. He is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics, and a member of the International Society for Prenatal Diagnosis, Association for Molecular Pathology, American Society of Human Genetics, and the College of American Pathologists.

Class of 1998: Joseph Y. Allen, M.D. was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine.

Class of 2000: Donald Stone, M.D. is now an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University and Director of Research at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His wife and three children will be joining him overseas, and look forward to exploring a new city.

Class of 2006, Tariq Ibrahim, M.D., has joined Lincoln County Medical Center in Ruidoso, N.M., as a general surgeon. Dr. Ibrahim started his new duties on Nov. 3, 2014. He comes to the Lincoln County Medical Complex from Gallup, where he was an attending general surgeon at the Indian Medical Center. Dr. Ibrahim received his bachelor's degree in neuroscience cum laude from UT Dallas. He completed his general surgery residency at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

Class of 2007: Joshua Hamilton, M.D., recently joined Memorial Hermann Medical Group Southeast General Surgery in Deer Park near Houston. Dr. Hamilton earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Texas A&M University and went on to complete his general surgery residency at Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency. Board certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Hamilton is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of problems involving the abdomen, groin, breast, gallbladder, and many other emergent conditions.

Class of 2008: Jennifer Duewall, M.D., has joined USMD Affiliated Services, a physician-led integrated health care system. Dr. Duewall, who will practice at the Plano West Clinic, specializes in internal medicine. She completed her residency at Baylor University Medical Center.

Housestaff

Lewis A. Raney, M.D. was awarded the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Texas Association of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (TAO). Dr. Raney completed his ears, nose, and throat (ENT) residency in 1964 and was in private practice at St. Paul University Hospital and a Clinical Associate Professor of ENT for 30 years. He retired from the Temple VA as Chief of ENT after 18 years but continues to work part time for the VA. He is also an Associate Professor of ENT at Texas A&M Medical School.

Michael Weisberg, M.D. is entering his 24th year of private practice in gastroenterology in Plano. He recently published his first novel, The Hospitalist, which is a story about medicine in the 21st century where the results of having a hospitalist taking care of you instead of your own doctor can be disastrous.

Graduate School

Class of 1977: Shelley Payne, Ph.D., has received the 2014 ASM Graduate Microbiology Teaching Award for the profound impact she has had on her students. Dr. Payne completed her doctorate degree at UT Southwestern Medical Center under the direction of Dr. R.A. Finkelstein. Following her postdoctoral training as a Damon Runyon Fellow in Dr. Bruce Ames’ laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, she joined the faculty of UT Austin, where she is Professor of Molecular Biosciences and University Distinguished Teaching Professor.

Class of 1991: Gary Huffnagle, Ph.D. has been elected by the American Academy of Microbiology as a 2014 Academy Fellow. This prestigious honor recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the field of microbiology.

Class of 2003: Charles E. Patterson Jr., Ph.D., Vice President for Research and Economic Development at Georgia Southern University and Dean, Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies, was named Interim President of Georgia Southwestern State University for a six-month term starting Jan. 1, 2015. 

School of Health Professions

Class of 2002: Paul La Bounty, Ph.D., Professor in the Baylor School of Education, was honored at Baylor University as the Collins Outstanding Professor. This is one of the highest honors given to Baylor faculty members and is chosen annually through an election by the senior class. Dr. Bounty graduated from UT Southwestern School of Health Professions with a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy and went on to earn a Ph.D. from Baylor University in 2007.
