Fellows & Residents Notes – February 2014

Benjamin Aaker, M.D., has joined the emergency medicine department at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D. A 2005 graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Medicine, Dr. Aaker completed his emergency medicine residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center in 2008.

David Candelario, D.O., has joined the staff of Red River Regional Hospital in Bonham. Dr. Candelario received training through UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Community and Family Medicine residency programs at Parkland Memorial Hospital, St. Paul University Hospital, and Children’s Medical Center Dallas. He will provide care to the residents of Fannin County and the surrounding communities at the hospital’s newly established Red River Family Practice office.

Brian J. Eastridge, M.D., trauma medical director and trauma/acute-care surgeon at University Hospital in San Antonio, has been elected Vice Chairman of the Texas EMS, Trauma & Acute Care Foundation Board. He took office Jan. 1 for a two-year term. TETAF is a nonprofit organization formed in 2006 by emergency medical services, trauma, and acute-care professionals to enhance the state’s EMS/trauma/acute-care system. A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Eastridge served a surgical critical care/trauma fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center in 1996-1997 and was a faculty  member of surgery at UT Southwestern from 1997 to 2005. He currently is Professor of Surgery at UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and is a colonel in the Army Reserve Medical Corps.

Sachin Gupta, M.D., has joined the cardiology team at USMD Affiliated Service’s Las Colinas clinic. Dr. Gupta, who earned his medical degree at the All India Institute of Medical Services in New Delhi, completed an internal medicine residency at UT Health Science Center at Houston before serving a fellowship in cardiology and an advanced fellowship in heart failure and cardiac transplantation at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Chirag Patel, M.D., has joined the ophthalmology department at Union Associated Physicians Clinic in Terre Haute, Ind. Dr. Patel, who completed his residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center, earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and served an internship at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He completed a glaucoma fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Jigar Patel, M.D., an emergency medicine physician at North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, Ga., has been named Medical Director of the Georgia division of Rural/Metro Ambulance. A graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School, Dr. Patel completed his residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center before joining North Fulton in 2007.

Amit Prasad, M.D., has joined the staff of Texas Health Huguley Hospital Fort Worth South. An interventional cardiologist, Dr. Prasad completed his internal medicine internship and residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center before performing cardiology fellowships at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans and at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Audrey Sernyak, M.D., has been appointed Director of the cardiovascular service line and Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at Saint Francis Healthcare in Wilmington, Del. Dr. Sernyak, who completed her internal medicine internship and residency, as well as a cardiovascular disease fellowship, at UT Southwestern Medical Center, earned a medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia.

Savitha Shastry, M.D., has joined the staff of East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. Dr. Shastry completed an endocrinology fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center after earning a medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and completing her internal medicine residency at Detroit Medical Center.
