Ridley honored by industry group as Volunteer of Year
Shawna Ridley, Director of Health Information Management-Faculty Practice Plan, has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Texas Health Information Management Association.
The 6,000-member association advances and protects the profession through professional development, recognition, and member engagement.
“It was truly a surprising honor,” Ms. Ridley said. “I have a passion for the health information management industry, and volunteerism is part of my professional DNA. Texas is pretty vast, so it was a great feeling to know that my time and efforts are both appreciated and recognized at the state level.”
Ms. Ridley has served in her current UT Southwestern Medical Center role for 14 years. She also is an adjunct instructor at DeVry University and local community colleges.
She recently was named a nominee for induction into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame, which was established in 1984 by the Governor’s Commission for Women. Inductees include first ladies, teachers, astronauts, and athletes. Even though she was not selected for induction, Ms. Ridley described the nomination as the most prestigious honor she’s received.
“It is truly an amazing feeling to be included on a platform with so many great women and highly decorated former honorees,” she said. “I am excited about the upcoming ceremony in October and would like to congratulate the five finalists selected.”
In addition, Ms. Ridley is about to wrap up two years of dedicated service as Chair of UT Southwestern’s Employee Advisory Council, which is comprised of staff representatives who help enhance communication, promote employee commitment, and improve operations across the UT Southwestern community.
The council also is instrumental in driving employee engagement events, including UT Southwestern Spirit Night, the Dallas Heart Walk, and wellness fairs.
Ms. Ridley graduated with honors from Texas Woman’s University with a bachelor’s degree in health information management. She also holds an MBA from Amberton University and a certificate in gerontology and geriatric services from UT Southwestern School of Health Professions. Ms. Ridley currently is pursuing a Ph.D. in health care services.
