Lister named Associate Dean for Education
Dr. George Lister, Professor of Pediatrics, has assumed the position of Associate Dean for Education for UT Southwestern Medical School.
In his new role, Dr. Lister will focus on curriculum development that includes the expansion of academic tracks for specialized medical student education. He also will join a small leadership group that will improve and reshape the selection process for medical student candidates.
Dr. Lister, who has relinquished his position as chairman of the Department of Pediatrics has long worked in close collaboration with Children’s Medical Center Dallas and has led the department during one of the most ambitious and successful faculty recruiting efforts in recent history. During his eight-year tenure,, the department has expanded from 111 to 242 faculty members.
Nationally reputed as an innovator in graduate and post-graduate medical education, Dr. Lister received the Maureen Andrew Mentorship Award of the Society for Pediatric Research in 2004. Consistent with this reputation, he has made the UT Southwestern pediatric residency program one of the most sought-after in the nation.
A recognized leader and honored scholar in pediatrics, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science in 2006. He has served as president of the American Pediatric Society, the Society for Pediatric Research, and as board chairman of the American Board of Pediatrics.
This year he received the Joseph W. St. Geme Jr. Leadership Award from the Federation of Pediatric Organizations in recognition of his broad contributions to the field of pediatrics.
Dr. Julio Perez Fontan, Associate Dean for Pediatric Services and Program Development and Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs at Children’s Medical Center, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Perez Fontan will retain his current functions at UT Southwestern and Children’s Medical Center.
Dr. Lister holds the Robert L. Moore Chair in Pediatrics.
