Longtime Faculty Club manager retires
By Rachel Skei Donihoo / August 2011
After 27 years of feeding, entertaining and befriending UT Southwestern physicians and employees, Hans Stettler is retiring from his position as manager of the A.W. Harris Faculty and Alumni Center.
A renowned chef, Mr. Stettler has seen his menu offerings adjusted and fine-tuned over the decades to keep pace with the times and the nutritional demands of his health-conscious clientele. From the check-in podium at the club he has seen Faculty Club membership grow from 700 to more than 1,600.
“Hans has been a true gentleman and friend to our faculty and their families,” said Dr. James Atkins, professor of internal medicine and president of the club. “He has been a truly dedicated and effective manager, and could always be counted on to prepare great tables of food, even for the club’s most elaborate dinners. In an era where similar clubs at other universities have languished, ours has stood the test of time under his expert management.”
For Mr. Stettler, the feeling is mutual.
“My career here has been a great privilege, and I feel so fortunate to have had a job that has given me so much happiness,” he said. “Our customers are like family to us, in many ways, and I am so thankful for the loyalty and kindness they’ve shown to me through the years. To be associated with UT Southwestern’s distinguished faculty – many of whom speak to me as a friend and colleague – is still, to this day, a special honor for me.”
Born and raised in Switzerland, Mr. Stettler and his wife of 41 years, Josie, moved to Texas in 1967 following his graduation from culinary school. He worked at a number of local venues before joining the UT Southwestern staff.
In his retirement, he hopes to spend more time with the families of his three grown daughters, including six grandchildren, who are scattered across Texas, California and Switzerland. Mr. Stettler also hopes to continue vegetable gardening and actively volunteering for community organizations he supports. Not surprisingly, one of his favorite endeavors is Meals on Wheels.
Mr. Stettler will be succeeded by Mary “Katie” Frederick, a veteran of more than 20 years in the restaurant and management business. Ms. Frederick has served as managing partner at Brinker International as well as training coordinator for El Fenix restaurants.
