The Women’s Dermatologic Society has elected Dr. Lisa A. Garner, clinical professor of dermatology, president for 2010-2011.

“I believe the Women’s Dermatologic Society provides a unique environment that encourages and nurtures women dermatologists at all stages of their careers to reach their highest potential as physicians, leaders, mentors, teachers and philanthropists,” said Dr. Garner, who also serves on the board of directors of the American Academy of Dermatology and received its Presidential Citation in 2006. She is former president of the Texas Dermatological Society and former vice president of the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

The Women’s Dermatologic Society is the nation’s third largest dermatologic organization, comprising 1,600 members nationally and internationally.

Dr. Nora Gimpel
, assistant professor of family and community medicine, recently received the top prize given by the UT Academy of Health Science Education.

The Innovations in Health Science Education Award recognized the pipeline program developed by Dr. Gimpel’s team to train medical students and residents in community participatory research. This training and research model was developed to help medical students and family medicine physicians improve patient care and reduce health disparities.

The honor is open to educators at all graduate and undergraduate UT health science schools — medical, nursing, dental, pharmacy and health professions. In addition to the award, Dr. Gimpel received $7,500.

Dr. Rod Rohrich, chairman of plastic surgery, has been elected U.S. director for the executive board of the World Association of Medical Editors, a 1,600-member nonprofit voluntary association of editors of peer-reviewed medical journals representing 980 publications from 92 countries. WAME aims to foster international cooperation and education of medical journal editors.

Dr. Rohrich, holder of the Crystal Charity Ball Distinguished Chair in Plastic Surgery and the Betty and Warren Woodward Chair in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, is editor-in-chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and an editor for Selected Readings in Plastic Surgery.
