Dr. Marc Nivet, a seasoned executive with more than 20 years of experience in institutions focused on academic medicine, joined UT Southwestern Medical Center on Sept. 1 in the newly created position of Executive Vice President for Institutional Advancement. In that role, he will provide strategic vision and oversight of Communications, Marketing, and Public Affairs; Community and Corporate Relations; Development; and Government Affairs and Policy.

Prior to joining UT Southwestern, Dr. Nivet was the Chief Diversity Officer and member of the executive leadership team at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in Washington, D.C. The AAMC represents all 145 accredited U.S. medical schools and nearly 400 major teaching hospitals.

Dr. Nivet, who has visited 136 academic medical centers around the country, said that UT Southwestern is a shining example of what makes academic medicine so important.

“I was drawn here because of the leadership and talent exhibited in research, medical education, patient care, and the organization’s commitment to serving its community,” he said. “UT Southwestern delivers excellent, compassionate patient care for even the most complex and serious conditions. And because of its deep commitment to discovery and education, its students across all three schools will be leaders in developing breakthroughs in science and clinical care in the future.”

At the AAMC, Dr. Nivet worked with federal officials and agencies, tracking legislative issues related to education and health issues for underserved populations, developing and managing the AAMC’s Office of Community Engagement, and serving as a frequent keynote speaker and panelist at national conferences and at medical schools across the country.

Dr. Nivet first visited UT Southwestern last January as the speaker for the Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration. “I had the opportunity to learn more about UT Southwestern’s history and became excited by where the organization is going,” he said. “There’s no question that UT Southwestern is a top tier academic medical center and its ambitions are big. My aim is to raise the profile of this institution even further and increase the visibility of the great work here at UT Southwestern. The story must be told widely and I look forward to driving that.”

He notes that UT Southwestern enjoys broad recognition within the Dallas area and support from a “vibrant and dedicated philanthropic community,” and said he looks forward to partnering with them in his new role to advance the public mission of improving health for all.

“Dr. Nivet has deep knowledge of the research, education, and patient care missions of academic medical centers, and he brings key insights as to how medical centers can successfully promote their excellence to key audiences,” said Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky, President of UT Southwestern. “Dr. Nivet will be responsible for developing and overseeing a comprehensive and coordinated strategic agenda to promote and advance UT Southwestern’s mission and goals.”

Prior to his position at the AAMC, Dr. Nivet served from 2005 to 2010 as the Chief Operating Officer and Treasurer of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation in New York, a national foundation focused on the education of health professionals. He concurrently served from 2008 to 2010 as Special Assistant to the Senior Vice President of Health at New York University, and held earlier positions involved in program planning and evaluation, financial management, grant development and review, media relations, and issues of access and diversity in medical school admissions.

Dr. Nivet earned his doctoral degree in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA with a focus on health care management from George Washington University’s School of Business. He has a bachelor’s of science degree in communication studies from Southern Connecticut State University. He is a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, and a former President of the National Association of Medical Minority Educators.

“I’m excited about being here, because across the enterprise, there is a visible commitment to excellence among the faculty, staff, and student populations, and there are people committed on a daily basis to making this the best place to learn, to discover, and to practice medicine. Most importantly, this is a superb place to receive care,” Dr. Nivet said.

Dr. Podolsky holds the Philip O’Bryan Montgomery, Jr., M.D. Distinguished Presidential Chair in Academic Administration, and the Doris and Bryan Wildenthal Distinguished Chair in Medical Science.
