Mental Health

UT Southwestern Medical Center is home to one of the premier centers in the world for the study, diagnosis and treatment of mental health and addictive disorders. Our board-certified psychiatrists are respected by their peers as authorities on all types of mental health problems such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders and eating disorders. We treat thousands of patients each year at our inpatient and outpatient facilities.

UT Southwestern draws on the strength of our research in the mental health field, using the latest, most effective treatments. At the same time, we offer outstanding patient care, whether for medication treatment, psychoanalysis, interactive therapies or inpatient medical treatments. In addition:

  • UT Southwestern’s Department of Psychiatry is granted more than $20 million per year in National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsored studies, making it ninth nationally among psychiatry departments. It boasts 16 endowed chairs and professorships.
  • UT Southwestern’s department of psychiatry receives an additional $5 million annually in research support from other sources – pharmaceutical companies, foundations, etc.
  • UT Southwestern’s clinical trials program gives patients access to treatments that are available years before they are offered to the general public. Research studies may offer free evaluation and treatment for qualified patients.

UT Southwestern is a major referral center, offering consultative services in every medical and surgical area.
