5 Speakers. 12 Minutes. Big Ideas. That's the premise behind UT Southwestern's inaugural "Thinking Big" event, held on February 18, 2012. Styled after the wildly popular TED Talks, "Thinking Big" featured some of UT Southwestern's many interesting professional and personal thinkers discussing everything from mountaineering to working on Hurricane Katrina relief teams.
Bruce Beutler, M.D.

As an internationally recognized leader in immunology, Dr. Bruce Beutler’s original studies at UT Southwestern led to the identification of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) as a key mediation of inflammation and to the identification of Toll-like receptors as sensors that act like sentinels to alert the host immune system when infection is present. Raymond Fowler, M.D., is co-founder of the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP). He served as the second President of the NAEMSP, helped oversee the organization's growth, and was instrumental in the creation of its textbook, "Prehospital Systems and Medical Oversight." As the first nephrologist to ascend the Seven Summits, Biff Palmer, M.D., followed a unique training regimen in preparing to climb the tallest mountain on each continent. On weekends, he stuffed his backpack with bags of peritoneal dialysis fluid and climbed the stairwell of UT Southwestern's Nancy B. and Jake L. Hamon Biomedical Research Building. Sumeet Teotia, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery
As a volunteer with Alliance for Smiles — which sends surgical teams around the world to perform cleft lip and palate surgeries — Sumeet Teotia, M.D., has operated on hundreds of youngsters and taught local surgeons how to correct cleft lip and palate deformities. The nonprofit organization helps establish and maintain permanent centers that offer dental treatment, speech therapy, parental education, and psychological counseling. Watch the presentation
